The Alamo (We the People)
Published in School & Library Binding by Compass Point Books (January, 2001)
Author: Michael Burgan
Average review score:

Telling young readers why we "Remember the Alamo!"
The "We the People" series presents key events in American history for younger students. In this volume on "The Alamo," Micahel Burgan explains how Americans immigrated into Texas, which was then part of Mexico. But by 1830 the number of Texians (immigrant Americans) outnumbered the Tejanos (native Mexicans). When Mexico changed the immigration laws to cut off the flow of American settlers and began collecting customs duties from the Texians, the transplanted Americans initiated a revolution. Young readers will doubtlessly notice some parallels between what happened in Texas and the story of the original colonists prior to the American Revolution. Burgan covers all of the details of the siege of the Alamo (it was not really a "battle") and completes the story of how Texas won its indepedence.

"The Alamo" is illustrated with historic photographs and engravings. The back of the book includes a Glossary, a "Did You Know?" section, Important Dates, Important People and places to look if you Want to Know More. For younger readers interested in finding out more about "The Alamo," this is the idea first book. They will learn as much about the why William Travis, Jim Bowie, Davy Crockett and 180 other men were willing to stay, fight and die for Texas independence as they will about the details of the siege.

Americans All!: Foreign-Born Soldiers in World War I (Texas A&m University Military History Series, 73)
Published in Hardcover by Texas A&M University Press (June, 2001)
Author: Nancy Gentile Ford
Average review score:

Foreign-Born Doughboys
In Americans All, Ford has successfully challenged longstanding assumptions about the immigrant experience during World War I and documented a key aspect of the army's modernization during the war. Nearly half a million foreign-born soldiers of forty-six different nationalities served in the wartime army. With one in five soldiers foreign-born, including many who did not speak English, the army faced a serious challenge training these men for battle. In marked contrast to the conformity demanded of foreign-born civilians on the homefront, Ford's meticulous research in official army records reveals that army officials demonstrated a remarkable sensitivity and respect for Old World cultures when formulating the training and recreational regimes of foreign-born troops. This is a well-written and important book whose blending of military and social history will interest readers interested in the military, the immigrant experience and the First World War.

Arguably the best review of the Luby's massacre ever written

From a detailed history of George Hennard and events leading up to his rampage to the aftermath that ensued, this book flows in an easy to read and gripping style. No prejudices or bias' are forced on the reader. The facts and people are presented as they were and you are left with many questions and conlusions. Dazzling and instructive
This book is for the serious jewelry student but even the casual reader could be caught by the amazingly beautiful jewelry in it. The collection consists of Etruscan, Greek and Roman gold jewelry reaching back to the 7th century B.C. and ending around the 3rd century A.D. The text is informative and succinct. The photos are superb. In particular, the technical virtuosity and design elegance of the ancient Etruscans are breathtaking.

Anglos and Mexicans in the Making of Texas, 1836-1986
Published in Paperback by Univ of Texas Press (September, 1987)
Author: David Montejano
Average review score:

Don't miss
I can not tell you how many copies of this book I have given away. Why? Because if you're visiting Texas, or have just moved here, and you don't "get" it (& why would you?), or have lived here a while but have been only subjected to the official story, you MUST read this book. But it's not only Texans -- new and veteran -- who need to read this. If you are interested in Southwestern U.S. history, you need to read it, and if you're interested in a very good case study of how "race" and class work together, against each other, and are intertwined in very complicated ways, you need to read this. And any student of civil rights movements will benefit from Montejano's analysis.

Montejano's writing is clear and direct, without being oversimplified. You'll be grateful you read this book, and probably keep coming back to it....things that may not make sense at first will become clearer with time. If only more history was written this well.

Another Part of the House (Texas Tradition, No 10)
Published in Paperback by Texas Christian Univ Pr (September, 1988)
Authors: Winston M. Estes and Bob J. Frye
Average review score:

Another Part Of The House
I first read this book more than 20 years ago and was completely mesmerized by its style and story. I still have my well worn copy, which I have reread several times over the years. There has never been a book I have read that has transported me so completely and touched me so deeply as this. From the well written description of small town Texas life in the early part of the 1900's, to the heartfelt truths about family and love, this book is, in my estimation, worthy to be called an American Classic.

An Apprenticeship or the Book of Delights (Texas Pan American Series)
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Texas Press (December, 1986)
Authors: Clarice Lispector, Lorri A. Parris, and Richard A. Mazzara
Average review score:

Deep and sensitive, as just Clarice was
The book of pleasures is a wonderful book where a woman, Dori, learns to have pleasure in life. She is a simple woman that was looking for love when she met Ulysses, a phylosophy teacher. He tells her that she does not know how to have pleasure and therefore she was not ready to be with him. She, then, goes into a very deep travel to inside, finding out love, hate, fear and pleasure. It's a wonderful and sensitive book... Specially made for women, with a feminin view of life.
